Benefits of Private Lessons

There are several benefits to pursing private studies in music.

For those studying composition

Whether you are a beginning composer or have more experience in composition, it is beneficial to have several points of views from which to draw on when you are creating your work.  Composition lessons give you an opportunity to learn from the experiences of another.  It also gives you a comfortable setting in which you may explore all of the facets of composition without judgement.

For those studying an instrument

Private instruction allows you to receive feedback on your playing and performance technique in a more personal manner.  For example, in a school band, the directors are in charge of listening to the band as a whole, working towards the sound of the group.  Private lessons offer you the chance to get personalized feedback on your playing with someone who is highly knowledgeable on your instrument.  Also, studying with someone who is knowledgeable on an instrument ensures that you learn the best playing techniques to set you up for success.

For those studying music theory

Private instruction in music theory allows you to experience a different way of approaching a topic - this may be an approach that resonates with you more than other explanations of the same topic.  Studying in a private forum allows you more control over the pacing and content of your learning.

It is my experience that those who study music privately connect to the wider world of music - they learn where they fit in in the grand scheme of music creation.  They also learn to appreciate art, beauty, and the joy and value of creation at all ages!
